This silver badge is dated 1724 and was a token of office worn by two of the lady directors of the Edinburgh Assembly. This assembly was set up in Edinburgh in the first half of the 18th century to celebrate music and formal dancing.

The oval badge is engraved with a wooden-legged beggar and the motto 'Nothing availeth without charity'.

In the 18th century, Edinburgh emerged as a centre of music with annual concerts and dancing assemblies. Proceeds from the dancing assemblies went to help the poor and the sick in the town.
