Silver medal (obverse) commemorating the Treaty of Union
Add to album

This is the obverse of a silver medal commemorating the Treaty of Union in 1707. The treaty united the parliaments of Scotland and England. The Union of the Crowns had taken place in 1603.

The obverse depicts a bust of Queen Anne. The Latin inscription around the edge translates as 'Anne, by the grace of God, Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.

Ever since 1707 the Union has defined Scotland's relationship with England. At that time there was great concern over sovereignty, government and trade. These issues were still of concern in 1997 when Scotland voted for a devolved parliament.
