Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold medal commemorating the Scottish Coronation of Charles I on 18 June 1633 at Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh. During the coronation procession medals such as this were thrown to the crowd by the Bishop of Moray.

The obverse shows the king crowned in his coronation robes, wearing the collars of the Thistle and Garter. The Latin inscription reads 'By the Grace of God, king of Scots, English, French and Irish'.

The commemorative medals were produced in both gold and silver and were minted in Edinburgh by Nicholas Briot, a Frenchman.
