Add to album

This is the reverse of a copy of a medal made in honour of the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots and the Dauphin Francois in 1558. The copy, which is larger than the original, dates from the 19th-century. It is made of bronze.

The reverse has a crowned shield of arms with a crowned 'F' to the left, a crowned 'M' to the right. The Latin inscription translates as 'He has made both one'. The reverse bears the date, 1558.

Born in Scotland, Mary was brought up in France, where at the age of 16 she married Francis, the French Dauphin. After the death of her father-in-law Henri II, she reigned briefly as Queen of France. Francois died in 1560.
