Medal (obverse), commemorating John, Duke of Albany

This is the obverse of a gold medal commemorating John, Duke of Albany, who ruled Scotland as regent on behalf of the young James V until 1524. It was struck using Scottish gold, probably in France. Only three known specimens now survive.

The obverse of the medal has a shield bearing the joined arms of the Duke and of his wife, Anne, crowned upon a cross. The Latin inscription translates as, 'John, Duke of Albany, Governor'.
