Banknote (front), One pound, issued by Royal Bank of Scotland

This is the front of a one pound banknote issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland on 3 January 1938. The note has only one signature, that of the Chief Accountant, David Speed which is printed.

The vignette at the top of the note consists of the portrait of George I flanked by the unicorn and the lion of the Royal Arms. The seated figure of Britannia and the standing figure representing 'Plenty' are to the left and the right of the note.

The design of this note was introduced in 1832 by W H Lizars of Edinburgh and remained in its basic form for over a century. The first modification took place in 1853, when 'One Pound' took the place of 'Twenty Shillings'.
