Add to album

This is the front of a one pound banknote issued by the North of Scotland & Town & County Bank Limited on 1 March 1918. The note was printed from plates engraved by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co from a design by Sir George Reid, RSA.

The main motif is Marischal College in Aberdeen. A panel at the left contains the arms of the bank, the county of Aberdeen and the city of Aberdeen. The note is hand-signed on behalf of the accountant, but has a printed signature of the general manager.

The North of Scotland Banking Company was founded in 1836. It was the largest of the banks based in the Aberdeen area, with branches across Scotland. It changed its name in 1907 to The North of Scotland & Town & County Bank Limited following a merger.
