Banknote (back), One pound, issued by City of Glasgow Bank

This is the back of a one pound banknote issued by the City of Glasgow Bank in 1872. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by Gilmour & Dean of Glasgow.

The back contains a representation of the arms of the City of Glasgow printed in blue with the surrounding motto, 'Let Glasgow Flourish'.

Although the Scottish banking system did not produce many failures, the most disastrous was the City of Glasgow Bank in 1878. Its shareholders had to bear the loss of £6 million. However, the Bank's notes continued to be accepted by other Scottish banks.
