Banknote (front), One pound, issued by British Linen Bank

This is the front of a one pound banknote issued by the British Linen Bank on 18 July 1917. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by Waterlow & Sons, London Wall, London.

The Royal Arms at the top of the note is flanked by circular panels containing the value. The central vignette in the vertical panel at the left has the bank emblem figure of Pallas, also known as the goddess Athena.

The British Linen Company started issuing notes in 1747 and by 1800 was one of the three most important banks in Scotland. It merged with the Bank of Scotland in 1970.
