Banknote (front), One pound, issued by Commercial Bank of Scotland

This is the front of a one pound banknote issued by the Commercial Bank of Scotland on 1 October 1849. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by W H Lizars of Edinburgh. It has been overwritten in red ink, 'Cancelled 24th October 1898'.

The central vignette consists of two females seated in front of Edinburgh castle. Portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are on the left and right and the bank's new head office is at the bottom of the note.

Established in 1810, the Commercial Bank of Scotland became one of the largest banks in Scotland. It joined with the National Bank of Scotland in 1959 to form the National Commercial Bank of Scotland which went on to become part of the Royal Bank group.
