One-pound banknote

This Leith Banking Company one pound banknote is dated 1 January 1798. It was engraved by Kirkwood & Son, Edinburgh, and signed by John Wright, Manager and William Cundell, Cashier. It is printed on one side only.

Twenty-shilling banknote, Leith Banking Company, 1 January 1798

The Leith Banking Company was established in 1793. It had seven branches, one of which was in Carlisle, and which was registered as an English bank. The company was based in Leith, Edinburgh's port. The bank failed in 1842 leaving debts of £123,582.
