This one shilling banknote was issued by the Mason Barrowman Company of Edinburgh. It is dated 1 October 1764.

One-shilling banknote, Mason, Barrowman Company, Edinburgh, 1764, one of three versions of propaganda notes relevant to the abolition of the Option Clause, 1765

The note was an item of propaganda in the debate surrounding the 'Option Clause', under which the issuing bank had the option of deferring payment, plus interest, for six months. The clause was abolished in 1765.
