Copper gilt medal (reverse) commemorating Queen Anne and James VIII, the Old Pretender
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper gilt medal commemorating Queen Anne and James VIII, the 'Old Pretender'. The medal dates from around 1712.

The reverse depicts the bust of James with the Latin inscription which translates as 'James III, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.

Medals were an important weapon in the propaganda war waged by Jacobites and Hanoverians, used both to encourage supporters and ridicule opponents. This piece of Stewart propaganda shows Anne and the exiled 'Old Pretender' James on the same medal.
