Tea caddy, probably made at Prestonpans, East Lothian

This creamware tea caddy was probably made in the 18th century at Prestonpans in East Lothian. Caddies such as this were made by several potteries, but they all date to before about 1800.

The glazed tea caddy has a figure of a female in relief on each side.

Good supplies of coal and clay and easy transport by sea meant that the south side of the Firth of Forth was an ideal location for potteries to develop. Small-scale works existed there from the 17th century and larger factories developed from around 1750
