Medal of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts

This silver medal of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts was awarded to Alexander J. Adie (1808-79) in 1832 for his experiments for heating hothouses. Adie's father, also called Alexander, was a leading scientific instrument maker.

The medal is inscribed 'SOCIETY OF ARTS FOR SCOTLAND' and, within a laurel wreath, ' TO/MR ALEXR. J. ADIE JUNR./ CIVIL ENGINEER, EDINR/ for his/ EXPERIMENTS ON APPARATUS/ FOR HEATING HOTHOUSES &c. /awarded/ 2nd May 1832'.

The Royal Scottish Society of Arts, founded in 1821, encouraged the improvement of 'useful arts and manufactures'. It awarded prize medals each year and over the years Alexander Adie and his sons won a number for their inventions and improvements.
