Map of the Battle of Culloden

This engraved map shows a plan of the Battle of Culloden and the adjacent country. Dated 1746, the map is attributed to John Finlayson, a mathematical instrument maker in Edinburgh. Finlayson served in the Jacobite artillery at Culloden.

The bottom right-hand corner of the map gives references to the English and Highland armies.

Strengthened by the return of troops from continental Europe, government forces commanded by the Duke of Sutherland continued their pursuit of the Jacobites. On 16 April 1746, at Culloden near Inverness, the Jacobite army was routed.
