Add to album

This collection of 13 hand printing blocks were used to stamp cloth processed at Huntingtower Bleachworks in Almondbank in Perthshire.

The thick wooden backing blocks have inscriptions set in brass or copper strip. One of the inscriptions reads, 'Tela Para/Sabanas'. This would have been stamped on cotton sheeting for an Egyptian customer.

For the first half of the 19th century textile manufacture was Scotland's most important industry. It continued to play a vital role in the country's economy even when shipbuilding and other heavy industries dominated.
