Copper sundial

This copper octagonal horizontal sundial, dated 1662, is signed by Gulielmo Havarto.

The sundial has a pierced gnomon - the column or pin that casts a shadow indicating the time of day.

Sundials, showing the time both at home and around the world, were very popular in the planned gardens of castles and mansion houses in 17th-century Scotland. They reflected the growing interest in science and the natural world.
