Photographic reproduction, of steam boat Charlotte Dundas

This photographic reproduction is of the 'Charlotte Dundas' - a steam powered paddle boat with an engine designed by William Symington in 1801.

The image has been reproduced from an original lithograph - a method of printing from a metal or stone surface which is not raised but is ink-receptive.

Symington had been commissioned by Lord Dundas to develop a steam powered tug for use on the Forth and Clyde Canal but fears about canal erosion halted the experiment. A second, more efficient boat, the 'Charlotte Dundas II', was built in 1803.
