Map, of Isle of Arran, Firth of Clyde

This map of the Island of Arran on the Firth of Clyde is taken from a Dutch book and is to a scale of .38 of an inch to one mile. It was possibly produced by Johann Blaeu of Amsterdam in 1655.

Map of Arran, evidently taken out of a Dutch book, to a scale of 0.38 of an inch to 1 mile, possibly by Blaeu, 1655 (?)

Advances in surveying and map production brought greater knowledge of the wider world in the late 16th and 17th century. New techniques also helped Scotland to become one of the best mapped countries of the 17th-century world.
