This is sheet 1 from the twelve sheets which make up the 'Map of Scotland', a folding map published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly in London. Mounted on linen, the map is dated 31 January 1806 and is to a scale of 3.5 miles to 1 inch.

Sheet 1 contains the map title, 'Map of Scotland from the latest Surveys'. The top of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides can be seen at the foot of the map.

New techniques had helped Scotland become one of the best mapped countries of the 17th-century world. This trend continued and more improved maps became a boon to travellers. Scotland became better known to Scots and to visitors alike.
