Map, of ScotlandThis map of Scotland was produced by Gerard Mercator in 1595. It is drawn in a scale of 22 Scotch miles to one inch. The map shows that knowledge of Scotland, particularly of the west coast and islands was very inaccurate at this time. This remained the case until the late 16th century surveys of Timothy Pont were published in the mid 17th century. Gerard Mercator was one of the best known of the Dutch-Flemish school of cartologists. He developed 'projection' - the projecting of a representation of a sphere onto a flat surface.
