Map of northern Scotland
Add to album

This is half of a map of Scotland in two sheets. This sheet depicts northern Scotland. It was taken from the atlas 'Atlantis Pars Altera', produced in 1595 by Gerard Mercator.

The map indicates a seemingly impassable range of mountains running between east and west, which reflects how Scotland was perceived at the time.

Gerard Mercator was one of the best known of the Dutch-Flemish school of cartologists. He developed 'projection' - the projecting of a representation of a sphere onto a flat surface.
