Water meter

This water meter, showing the internal arrangement, was patented and made by Glenfield and Kennedy of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire. It was built for demonstration purposes and probably dates from the second half of the 19th century.

The meter has a cast iron base and outer case, with brass and steel gears and axles and rubber seals. The glass covers are for demonstration only - on a working example these parts would be iron sheets.
