Flasks, used by Joseph Black
Add to album

These flasks were used in classroom demonstrations or experiments by Professor Joseph Black (1728-99) at Edinburgh University. They were made in the late 18th century, possibly at Leith.

The flask on the left is of pale green glass with a round bottom. The one on the right is of thick dark-green glass. The necks of both are broken.

In addition to his academic duties as Professor of Chemistry at Edinburgh University, Black had an extensive private practice, both as a physician and as a consultant to some of the new industries then developing in Scotland.
