This spring tool, for opening and shaping glass, is of a type used in the manufacture of flint glass. They date from around 1850 and probably come from the Holyrood Flint Glassworks in Edinburgh. They are made of steel and a hardwood.

The making of bottle glass began in the 17th century and became important in the 18th. To this tradition was added the making of better quality glass, and by the 1860s Edinburgh was recognized as a world leader in the manufacture of engraved table glassware.
