Strap end

This bronze strap end was found at Hurly Hawkin in Angus. It is an Anglo-Saxon type, made between 800 and 900.

The strap end is ornamented with three animal masks in high relief, one at the tip and two facing each other in the centre. There is a single rivet at the split end, where a fragment of leather also survives.

Metal strap ends were attached to leather straps, both for horse harness and human belt fittings, to protect the ends of the straps. The leather rarely survives, but the metal fittings, often ornamented, are fairly common.
