Piece of a pan handle

This end of a bronze handle of a pan was found on the floor of a broch at Hurly Hawkin in Angus. It is from a quality Roman pan of a type known as a patera. It made its way by trade or gift to this native settlement site between 80 and 200 AD.

Roman pans were expensive cooking wares, with many used to heat wine. Some were made in Roman Britain, but others were clearly imported from Gaul. They were traded or passed as gifts to native chiefs far beyond the Roman frontier.
