AxeheadThis axehead (pictured here on a modern haft) was probably found near Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland. It probably dates from between the 9th to 12th century. The iron axehead has been much damaged by corrosion. Viking Age axes appear in a number of forms. Some were used as tools, others as weapons. Often it is difficult to distinguish which function was intended, especially since a range of tools was often included in Viking warriors' graves.
