From Pierowall, Westray, Orkney

This gilt bronze terminal of a drinking horn was found in a Viking grave at Pierowall on Westray in Orkney. It dates from between 850 and 950.

The terminal is conical and ends in a ball. It is decorated with lines, rings and dots, and other designs. It is incomplete and partially corroded.

Cattle horns, embellished with an elaborate metal mount at the mouth and a metal terminal, were a high status drinking utensil in the Viking world.
