Cross (fragment)
Add to album

This fragment of a cross is one of a number of sculptured stones found at the parish church of Tarbat at Portmahomack in Ross-shire. The site is almost certainly that of a Pictish monastery. The carving was made between 775 and 850.

This fragment may be from the junction of the one arm with the shaft. It is decorated with interlace.

Many of the early Christian carvings in the areas of Pictish settlement have interlace patterns, which are reminiscent of designs on contemporary metalwork and manuscripts.
