Sculptured stone

This sculptured stone carved with Pictish symbols was found at Invereen at Moy in Inverness-shire. It dates from sometime between 500 and 800.

The slab is carved with three symbols: the so-called double-disc and Z-rod, the crescent and V-rod, and a circle and line. The first two are common Pictish symbols, found throughout Pictland. The circle and line symbol is unique and may be a later addition.

Monumental stones and some silver jewellery were decorated by the Picts with a range of unusual symbols, some of everyday objects and others more abstract. Many theories have been proposed to explain their meanings which nevertheless remain obscure.
