Sculptured stoneThis sculptured stone carved with Pictish symbols was found at Invereen at Moy in Inverness-shire. It dates from sometime between 500 and 800. The slab is carved with three symbols: the so-called double-disc and Z-rod, the crescent and V-rod, and a circle and line. The first two are common Pictish symbols, found throughout Pictland. The circle and line symbol is unique and may be a later addition. Monumental stones and some silver jewellery were decorated by the Picts with a range of unusual symbols, some of everyday objects and others more abstract. Many theories have been proposed to explain their meanings which nevertheless remain obscure. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
