Sculptured stone
Add to album

This stone with incised decoration was found at the site of an early monastery at St Boniface churchyard on Papa Westray in Orkney. It is evidence of the spread of Christianity in Orkney between 600 and 800.

On one face of the stone there is an incised cross with expanded arms in a circle. Above it is a small Latin cross, the arms ending in crescents.

Christianity was introduced to Scotland after the Romans had left. Different traditions of Christianity developed in different areas, often influencing one another.
