This arm of a sandstone cross head was found on the site of a Northumbrian monastery at Hoddom in Dumfriesshire. It is one of several crosses from there showing Northumbrian influence in their designs. The stone dates from the 8th century.
The cross is divided into panels and sculpted in relief. Each of the faces is decorated. On this side is an interlace panel.
The Northumbrians gained control of southern Scotland in the 7th century, and controlled to the Firth of Forth until into the 10th century. During this time the Northumbrian church spread into the area, founding monasteries such as Hoddam.
