Carved pendant of jet
Add to album

This jet pendant was found at Lochspouts Crannog in Ayrshire. It was an expensive religious amulet, worn sometime between 900 and 1100.

The pendant is in the shape of a cross, and is decorated with incised circles. The shape is reminiscent of monumental stone crossheads from the period.

The only significant source of good quality jet occurs around Whitby in Yorkshire, although jet-related substances such as cannel coal and lignite are known from several places in Scotland. Jet was used in Scotland for high status objects.
