Fragments of a pot made in Gaul

These two fragments of a pot were found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. They were made in Gaul, present day France, and imported by Gaulish traders, sometime between 575 and 650.

The two fragments, joined together, form part of the rim of a spouted pitcher.

The crannog (lake dwelling) at Buiston was probably the residence of a high status family and its servants. A number of wooden objects were preserved there, together with some exotic imports such as this pot.
