Nail cleaner
Add to album

This iron nail cleaner was found at the high-status lake dwelling at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was used sometime between 580 and 700.

The elegant tool is double-pointed, with a twisted stem which turns back into a S-shaped loop at the end.

Early metalsmiths soon discovered the versatile qualities of iron. It could be hammered into decorative items, but was equally good for functional objects like nails. Its strength was soon exploited in expensive armour and weapons.
