Axehead

This iron axehead was found at Buiston Crannog in Ayrshire. It was used sometime between 600 and 700.

The axe is a type known as a folded axe. It was made by bending the metal over to form the socket.

Iron first appeared in Scotland by 700 BC. It was more difficult to smelt than other metals, requiring more controlled furnace conditions. At first metalsmiths didn't understand the properties of iron, but they soon learned to exploit its qualities.
