Shoe (Piece)
Add to album

This piece of a leather shoe was found at Dowalton Loch Crannog in Wigtownshire. It dates from between 540 and 660.

The shoe was decorated with punched designs on the leather.

In Scotland leatherworking was an everyday task. But there were also some specialists from at least Roman times, who used a wide range of tools. Punches could be used to impress patterns in the leather.
