Add to album

This miniature stone axehead was found at Hyndford Crannog in Lanarkshire. It is polished and worn, much handled from its reuse as an amulet. The axehead dates from sometime between 3500 and 2500 BC, but was reused between 100 BC and 100 AD.

Neolithic polished stone axe from Hyndford Crannog

Axes were used as offerings over many thousands of years, and must have had a special significance. This example was originally used for small chopping and shaping purposes, but later was valued as an amulet.
