Piece of a steatite lamp
Add to album

This piece of a steatite lamp was found at Hyndford Crannog in Lanarkshire, one of a number of stone lamps from there. It was made sometime between 0 and 250 AD.

The lamp is incomplete, with surviving portions in two pieces. If complete, it would have comprised a shallow bowl, linked to the handle (which in this example is pierced).

The steatite from which this lamp was made comes from Glenelg in Inverness-shire. The lamp may have travelled across Scotland as a gift or as an exchange item.
