Incised graffiti on a piece of slate
Add to album

This incised graffiti on slate was found during excavations at Jarlshof in Shetland. It is one of several rough sketches etched on local stone. The drawing was made sometime between 800 and 1300.

The drawing depicts an equal-armed cross with small scrolls.

Slate is easily etched, and ideal for use as a trial piece or for doodling. A number of pieces of slate have been found at Jarlshof, with a range of drawings.
