Knife

This slate knife was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It dates from between 1000 and 600 BC. It could have been used for a variety of purposes, including skinning.

The knife is complete, with a short handle, straight back, and a deep notch between the blade and handle. It has a crescent-shaped cutting edge.

The inhabitants of Jarlshof made use of the abundant local supplies of stone to make crude-looking but effective tools.
