Add to album

This slate knife was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It dates from between 1000 and 600 BC.

The triangular blade is made from a flake of slate which has been rubbed smooth by pumice. The blade has a serrated edge which would have helped it cut cleanly. Part of the handle is missing.

The inhabitants of Jarlshof made use of the abundant local supplies of stone to make crude-looking but effective tools.
