Incised graffiti on a stone
Add to album

This graffiti incised on a stone was found during excavations at Jarlshof in Shetland. It is one of several rough sketches etched on local stone, made sometime between 800 and 1300.

The drawing has two parallel rows of interlace, a motif found on carved monumental stones and manuscripts of the period. The stone is broken at both ends.

Slate is easily etched, and ideal for use as a trial piece or for doodling. A number of pieces of slate have been found at Jarlshof, with a range of drawings.
