From Dunadd, Argyll

Discs of bronze
Add to album

These two enamelled bronze discs, one of them gilt, were found at Dunadd in Argyll. Both are exotic items, broken off valuable objects for reuse into new objects by the craft specialists at Dunadd. One of the discs is perhaps from a hanging bowl.

The gilt disc, now corroded, is Frankish metalwork from France or Germany, perhaps arriving at Dunadd via Northumbria. The other disc, now imperfect, has trumpet spiral decoration similar to Irish examples.

At the site of the royal hillfort of Dunadd in Argyll, pieces of exotic metalwork have been found, suggesting that craftsmen there were cutting up and recycling objects for their own work.
