Limpet scoops

These scoops were found at Cnoc Sligeach on Oronsay in the Inner Hebrides. They were used between 6000 and 3500 BC to scoop the meat from limpets (small shellfish which cling to rocks). The two on the left are made from stones, the other two from bone.

Stone limpet hammer or bevelled pebble from Cnoc Sligeach, Oronsay

A number of shell middens - large refuse piles of bone, shell and other objects - have been excavated on the island of Oronsay, providing much evidence of the lifestyle of the early inhabitants. The middens were in use over a long period of time.
