This fragment of the rim of a glass bowl was found at Castlehill Wood in Stirlingshire. It is from a Roman bowl, which found its way to a native site sometime between 80 and 100 AD.
The fragment is from a pillar-moulded bowl, a type of bowl with fluting made by casting glass. It was made with purple and white speckled glass.
Although the Roman occupation in Scotland was strictly military, it did result in a number of fine objects being imported. These spread by various means to the population around the camps, where they were used as status symbols in the local society.
