Tankard staves
Add to album

These two wooden staves from a tankard were found in an underground chamber at Castle Newe in Aberdeenshire. The tankard may have been hidden in the chamber for safekeeping. The staves are made from juniper and date from between 100 BC and 200 AD.

These staves and other missing staves would have been set into a base-board and bound together with a metal fitting. The tops of the staves are decorated with incised slanting lines.
